COP29 in Baku is an indicator of Azerbaijan’s important role in global climate policy
Today, Azerbaijan is one of the important venues where events are held that address global issues and unite countries of the world. Azerbaijan’s reputation in hosting global events continues to strengthen day by day. Hosting such a large-scale international event as COP29 in Baku is an indicator of the important role of Azerbaijan in global climate policy.
Italian expert on economic and geopolitical issues Domenico Letizia said this in an interview with Day.Az.
According to him, preparations for COP29 are being observed and discussed all over the world, “It is no coincidence that the UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Vladanka Andreeva highly appreciated the preparations for COP29 in Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan prepared for this prestigious event in a short period of time, which deserves high respect,” our interlocutor noted.
An Italian economist believes that the goal of COP29 will be to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
“One of the most pressing issues on the global agenda is holding the international conference COP29 and achieving results in the fight against climate change. By joining the UN Sustainable Development Goals, Azerbaijan has defined specific goals for its environmental policy at the national and global levels,” he recalled.
In conclusion, our interlocutor expressed confidence that the high assessment and trust placed in the COP29 presidency in the preparatory activities will be fully justified.
Let us recall that in November this year, Azerbaijan will host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29). The decision to do so was made at the COP28 plenary session held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Over the course of two weeks, Baku, becoming the center of the world, will host about 70-80 thousand foreign guests.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. The abbreviation COP stands for Conference of Parties, which is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The convention has 198 parties. Unless the parties decide otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
